Hi Diane, greeting from Jakarta. Thank you for your attention to montiro.id.
Related to your car problem, it seems the problem refers to immobilizer system.
Immobilizer system invented to support security system for modern vehicles.
There are 4 components which are bond to each other. Car Key, Housing Key (Receiver), Immobilizer module and ECU (Electronic Control Unit). They are communicating with program coding system. Once found 1 component is broken / fault then the ignition can not be executed.
So we can try to define your problem as below:
1. Key problem (as transponder chip)
There is a programmed chip inside the vehicle key. It is a sensitive component. Keep away the key from the magnet things, felt down and water. It may cause the chip will fault.
2. Housing Key (Receiver) as transponder key amplifier
Usually the problem found at the charcoal (key coil) its inserted in this component.
3. Immobilizer module (as transponder key ECU)
This component is a lifetime product but still can be malfunction. The fault can be caused by short circuit for instance.
4. ECU (Electronic Contro Unit)
ECU will start the ignition when signal from transponder key ecu is received
